Today, we’d like to share with you this clip of Fish Soho stylist, Nigel cutting the hair of Gemma. Gemma was after a 60s inspired, mod bob with a sharp fringe and we think Nigel, nailed it!

Today on the blog, our alternative fashion and beauty expert, Kirstie from Petit Papillon de Nuit shares her ideas on how to begin to push the boundaries with your fashion and beauty looks.

I really struggled at first when I wanted to stay true to a personal style; when the shops only sell the latest trend, how are you supposed to be unique and different? Well, here are five lessons I learnt, which might just help you spice up your wardrobe and your look.

1. Experiment with your hair.

It sounds extreme and a little scary; the prospect of chopping up your hair or choosing an unusual new colour, but it need not be! If you’re looking for a new style, consult your hairdresser, but remember whatever you do it will always grow back! If you’re going to try a new colour, use semi-permanent dye and it will wash out after a few weeks. If you don’t try, you’ll never know.

2. Shop Elsewhere.

Don’t get me wrong, we have a great high-street in the UK, but you can add a few statement pieces to your wardrobe by checking out charity shops, small independent boutiques, markets, vintage stores and fairs, eBay and Etsy! It might take a lot of rummaging but you’ll find overall it’s much cheaper and there are so many treasures waiting to be discovered.

3. Shop Abroad

Yep, this idea can be expensive, but if you’re looking to make an investment in something really wonderful it’s the way to go. To be entirely honest, although London Fashion Week is one of the most exciting in the world, our shops don’t tend to push the boundaries. Online stores from America, Japan, France and many more places may come with high postage, but they’re much more experimental with their fashion.

4. Learn to Sew

Pull apart old clothes, customise new clothes, fix up vintage clothes, or even raid sale rails for super cheap dresses with broken zips – you won’t face any problems with some basic sewing skills. Even a press-stud or an iron on motif can make something drab become unique and edgy.

5. Stay inspired.

Fashion magazines report on what’s already happened in fashion, you can be the trend setter, not the trend follower by keeping an eye out on the internet for new emerging trends, or by visiting the fashion shows of new up and coming designers. Stay ahead of the crowd, and you’ll never look the same as everyone else.

We love browsing the internet for inspiration, Pinterest is a great place to start, have you checked out the Fish Soho pins?

This week, Fish guest blogger, Kirstie from Petit Papillon De Nuit tells us about her love for vintage clothing, let us know what you think!

On my blog this week, I visited a really gorgeous shop called Raiders Vintage; I explored it, dug out treasures, took some pictures, and I thought about the ways I style vintage pieces into modern outfits, but the whole experience got me thinking.

Sometimes when I say I’m a fan of vintage, a few people won’t hesitate to say “But it’s just romanticizing old, useless clothes. That’s not what those times were actually like”, and ok, fair enough, many a store has called an old hand me down “vintage”, and I’m sure war times, having no money and no healthcare wasn’t great; but what is the actual harm in romanticizing things? If you respect an era, is it really so bad to dress up and have fun doing things people consider “vintage”?

My love of classic styles started with watching films such as Some Like it Hot, and Funny Face, I think the way women were so glamorous; so well kept, with perfect makeup, and their waists pulled in to within an inch of their lives was fascinating. It’s almost as if in modern times, we’ve lost a little of dressing up as an art form. Maybe I AM romanticizing, but the thought of Hollywood film stars sitting in front of a lit up mirror, with curlers in their hair and a dressing table covered in Chanel perfume bottles, lipsticks, and jewellery just makes my heart beat a little faster!

Maybe the other reason I want to stick up for vintage is because I’m very bitter and twisted when it comes to modern fashion. Ok, call me a grump, tell me I don’t understand it and shouldn’t be so stuck up, but going the shops in knickers shorts and a crop top isn’t sexy. Don’t get me wrong, I know the ladies from past times weren’t all prim and proper (I’m a sucker for pin-up girls and burlesque) but they had a bit of decorum about the whole thing. Remember, in vintage clothing, it was all about what you imagine, not what you can see; a curvaceous full skirted dress with always be more sexy than a tube dress, or maybe that’s just in my opinion?

You guys probably know, but I’m a big advocate of alternative fashion, and so often in this genre some pretty tattooed ladies mix pin-up 50s dresses from brands like Hell Bunny and Colectif with stockings, kitten heels and cherry red lips – that’s all you need to make a lasting impression.

I don’t know guys, maybe I’m just cynical because I know I’d look awful in high-waisted knicker shorts and a crop top, or maybe I just really believe Marilyn Monroe will forever trump Rhianna in hotness. What do you all think?

My photos were taken at the gorgeous Raiders Vintage on Renshaw Street, Liverpool.

We’re kick starting our Fish Salon interviews again, this week we’ve quizzed Salon Manager, Jacqui about some of her favourite things, here goes…

Favourite Film: It’s hard to choose, I love all the 80′s classics. If I had to narrow it down my top 3 would be Heathers, True Romance and Pretty in Pink.

Favourite Band: Once again, it’s artists from the 80′s such as Freddy Mercury and Bowie.

Hair Icon: Debbie Harry, she’s got the bleach blonde look down to a tee.

Favourite Thing About Soho: I love the way it’s like a little community, always seeing a familiar face.

Favourite Fish Product: Dry Shampoo, I love using it on clean hair to get rid of that freshly washed fluffy-ness and to give body.

Okay, so you might have seen me on this blog, or at TOWIB prancing around in my bright blue tights printed with Narwhals, squids, and pirate boats. I never expected the reaction I got, but I’m really glad people actually liked the combination of my Teja Jamilla tights and UNIF neon platform boots. I guess it was a risk, but if there’s an excuse to wear something silly and get away with it (it was an event for creatives…) I usually take it.

I’d like to take this opportunity to share with you my hosiery obsession. I think tights, stockings and socks are the perfect way to add a little creative fun to an outfit; you can pair bright crazy leg wear with any little black dress, and straight away you have something fun and striking. Easy as that. So here are some of my absolute favourite designs from around the web!

Teja Jamilla

This little Etsy Boutique based in Somerset is where I got my lovely narwhal tights from! The pirate design comes in a range of different colour combinations, so you can be demure with a print on black, or brave with a print on neon pink. The shop features a few other beautiful designs too such as a butterfly and dragonfly print, and an antique key print. I love the quality of print on these tights; the lines are really crisp and there’s no bleed in the ink.

BZR

Ombré is a huge trend, especially in the blogging world. Hands up who has pretty Ombré hair? Well maybe your legs need a bit of colourful excitement too. You can get these dip-dye tights via Etsy from the USA, meaning barely anyone in the UK is going to have the same thing. Each pair of these tights is handmade as well, making them really, truly unique!

Bebaroque

If you have a little bit of a larger budget, or some leftover birthday money, you might want to spoil yourself with something really special. Bebaroque make extravagant, show-girl-esque embellished and printed tights that will outshine your entire outfit. They might be a little costly, but you wont find a bead out of place, and the tights are made super strong to avoid the danger of ladders and holes! Bebaroque tights are especially perfect for weddings and nights out on the town when it gets a little colder, but you still want to look glamorous.

We are super pleased to welcome JK to the Fish Crew, JK is a super talented, stylish student from Bournemouth with a street style blog called Unlimited by JK. We’ve ask JK to scout the streets of the UK for some seriously sleek style.

Our first look to share with you was taken just around the corner from the Fish Salon, on Poland Street in Soho. This dapper looking chap was at the YMC Menswear Show on 15th June. What do we think Fish folks?

Would you rock this look or is this guy just too cool for school?
