Stylist Profile: Chris Lock

Name: Chris Lock

Length of time at Fish: 6 years

Did you always want to be a stylist: I was a chef when I was 21 and it was what I always wanted to do but after studying at college and working in a restaurant I decided I didn’t really like it. I had a friend who invited me to watch a hair show in Leicester, I was really inspired and thought how much I would love to do that. A month later I was in London on a hairdressing course, that was 20 years ago! I made the right choice.

Worst hair disaster: When I was around 17/18 I had a wedge cut with a long fringe modelled on David Sylvian from the pop group Japan. For a while it looked great… this was 1987! I decided to bleach it with sun-in (hair colour spray) then sit in the sun, it got really over processed and went a horrible yellow colour.

Fave Fish product: Stonefish as I love it’s matt feel and it gives hair texture a good edge.

What celeb would you like to get your hands on: Andy Warhol would be a fascinating chat, circa 1977 obviously!

Style icon: Anyone that’s not styled to death by other people. The 50′s quiff worn by Elvis and James Dean is a timeless style and the ultimate in cool!

Who’s got the ‘daddy’ of all hairstyles?

Here at Fish, style is our middle name – we are always interested in what’s hot and what’s not.

With Father’s Day just around the corner (it’s Sunday 19th if you’ve just read this and started panicking) we’ve decided to look at celebrity dads’ iconic hair.

David Beckham

David Beckham is arguably as famous for his style as for his footballing skills. Over the past decade or more, he has gone from famous footballer to style icon. Whatever he does, men everywhere want to follow suit, and we often get clients asking for his latest cut.

The Mohican is probably the most radical of all the styles he had. As soon he appeared sporting this extreme look, the media latched onto it; all of a sudden everywhere you looked there was a boy with a Mohican…until the next style came along.

Paul McCartney

Paul Mcartney and the rest of the Beatles were once almost as popular for their haircuts as they were their music. During the 60s the band sported ‘moptops’, nicknamed this because of the actual close resemblance to a mop, which soon became a popular hairstyle for a lot of men.

By the looks of things Sir Paul is still trying to keep this style going now…maybe with a bit less hair!

Paul Weller

Another iconic dad trying to keep his retro style going is Paul Weller. Over the last 20 years or so his hairstyle is seemingly unchanged!  This is definitely a man who knows his style and is sticking to it!

Brad Pitt

Brad Pitt has been on our screens for over 20 years now and definitely falls under the ‘iconic dad’ label. Brad and partner Angelina Jolie have an impressive 6 children on top of both of their hectic film careers and yet he still finds time to look after his locks!

His choice of styles aren’t as ‘wild’ as some, but they are still much copied.  What we can’t work out though is whether it is the men who want to look like Brad, or their missus’ who want them to look like Brad!

These are just a snapshot of some famous barnets.  We could go on, but we’ll wrap it up here… . you probably have to nip out to buy a last minute card or present now!

Do you think there’s someone important that we’ve missed? Or have you ever changed your hairstyle because of someone famous? Let us know below.

Our own Big Freeze.

How excellent. Just as the weather heats up, we’ve got a new range of styling products out to keep you cool.  Our new FishFreezer range has just hit Boots. We’ve taken the two cult Soho favourites with an added cooling menthol hit. We think it’s perfect for any barnet in a heatwave.

We think the new Jelly Fish Frozen Firm Styling Gel, is just what you need to wake you up first thing. What’s brilliant is that this gel dries firm so no fear of melting or running. For ultimate hold, apply to damp hair, style and then blast dry to lock ‘n’ load your look.

Fish Shape Frozen Firm Texturising Cream is ideal for creating choppy and chunky styles for short to mid length hair with the added fresh minty blast of menthol. Work a pea sized amount into your mitts and work over towel dried hair.

Have you tried them? Let us know what you think….

Stylist Profile: Bianca Fisher

This month, let’s meet the appropriately named Bianca Fisher…

Name: Bianca Fisher

Length of time at Fish: 6 months

Did you always want to be a sytlist? I have always wanted to create things with my hands. I find cutting hair is like being an artist as you can create different shapes.

Worst Hair Disaster: My worst hair disaster was in the 90′s. I had a fringe that was about an inch long and as my forehead is about 3 inches long, it didnt do any favours for my face shape.

Fave Fish product: hmmm, thats a hard one. The two main ones I like are Aqua Fish paste because I love the natural out of bed look, so its great to use after washing your hair. Also Aqua Fishfingers which is a mens product but I find it great to use on womens hair as it doesnt go hard so you can play with your hair all day.

What celeb would you most like to style? Dita Von Teese. I would love to be her best buddy and borrow all her clothes. I love women to look glamourous and sexy as only women pull that look off the best.

Ultimate Style Icon: Vivian Westwood is my hair icon, she has had amazing hair in the past and I love that whole statement look, but she could do with a personal stylist on a day to day basis as she could pull out amazing and crazy styles and that would be awesome to work with.

You ask and we will deliver. We’ve had lots of comments lately about how you’d really like to get some style tips from us so you know a little better how to work your styles with the products that are right for you. So we’ve decided to do a new feature: product of the month. This month we’re focusing on KINGFISHER as it’s one of the favourites with customers in the Salon… and with good reason.

Stylist Profile

As the clocks are going forward this week, we’ve been looking forward to the spring & summer season, and generally a better feelgood mood. Lightening up is a usual for summertime, so we’d like to introduce you to Lottie, Fish Salon Stylist and Colourist extrordinaire…

Name: Lottie Fiveash

Job: Stylist and Colourist

Length of time at Fish: 3 and a half years

Did you always want to be a stylist?  Yes, i always knew i wanted to work in the beauty or fashion industry and this was a good way of combining the both. I started working as a saturday girl at 15 in a local salon and enjoyed the salon environment so it just went from there really.

Worst hair disaster: I got my hair chemically straightened when i was 15 , and it didnt work but left me with dry, damaged curly hair! …… Not a good look.

Fave fish product: aqua fishpaste as its versitile and can be used on a varity of styles on both men and women.

What celeb would you most like to get your hands on and what would you do to them? Simon Cowell. He def needs to sort out that flat top with a parting, I would create more texture and use fish paste to define.

Top insider tip? Get your hair cut reguarly to keep it in shape and prevent damage.

Ultimate style icon: Scarlett Johansson she always manages to look effortlessy glamourous, and her hair always looks in good condition be it short or long.

De-Gunking Proving Popular…

Here at Fish, we love an award, which is why we were pretty chuffed to be nominated for “Best New Men’s Grooming Product” for our Superfish Cleanfish De-Gunk shampoo at the CEW Industry Awards. CEW stands for Cosmetic Executive Women (in case you were wondering) and their annual awards are very popular with the folk in hair. We were excited because some blokes from Heart FM were there and they all like Fish.

Over the next few months, the lovely ladies of the CEW will be voting for their favourite products (having got their menfolk to try it in our case) and the winners will be announced in June.

Check out our pics below of the lovely Donna, fellow Fish worker, proudly showing off Fish to the world of CEW.

We even decided to put a product in a Fish bowl for dramatic irony…

Fish... in a Fish bowl

Wish us luck!

Stylist Profile

As Britain faces sub-zero temperatures the mood in the Fish Soho Salon is still hotting up as Christmas shoppers make a welcome appearance in the salon to get their barnets looking top in time for the festive season. With Christmas just over two weeks away here’s a pre-Christmas treat from Fish, an insight into one of our best elves… sorry stylists… Matt Hookings whose been swimming around the Fish Soho Salon for five years…

Name: Matt Hookings

Job: Stylist

Did you always want to be a hair stylist: To be honest I’d have to answer that question NO! When I was younger I always fancied myself as England’s next David Seaman…

What’s your favourite Fish product: For me the StoneFish Clay for its sheer diversity

What’s your worst hair disaster: The worst haircut I’ve ever had was my “Essex boy mullet”. The best way to describe this is a slick rick fringe with it spiking up at the crown with a mullety feel running through the back with some wet look product run through it to seal the deal…..  ahhh to be 14 again!

Which celebrity would you most like to get your hands on and what would you do: I would quite like to cut Will Smiths hair, take him back to the classic “fresh Prince” days and 90′s fade/Brick top that mamma up! Plus I think his banter would be quite good!

What’s your top insider tip: When towel drying your hair try not to rub it too vigorously as this will only rough up the cuticle and leave it looking fluffy; instead use the towel to pat the hair dry against the head to reduce frizz

Who’s your ultimate style icon: If I was to pick one it would be Ian Brown Stone Roses era, it’s pretty much a Beatles bowl with a bit more texture. To get this look ask your hairdresser for a heavy bowl cut and to maintain it I would recommend using Sleek Fish High Gloss Serum through it when its clean to add shine (but not too much!) and after a couple of days after cleaning Fresh Fish Revitalising Dry Shampoo to keep it fresh. Try using the StoneFish Clay to bring out the texture.

The 30th November marks the end of Movember

We’ve been waiting 30 hair raising days Fish followers but we are pleased to announce the end of Movember is here as men and women worldwide breathe a sigh of relief- sorry to all you tache lovers out there!

Though we’re quite loving our new found Tache of Authority we’re all looking forward to getting back to normality and a hair free top lip!

This year has been bigger, better and hairier than ever so we want to say a massive well done to everyone who donned a Mo this Movember to raise money for The Prostate Cancer Charity- go on give yourselves a pat on the backs you deserve it!

To help you in your quest for a fuzz free face we at Fish have got the insider knowledge to get you soft stubble free chops from Diane Wood (Barbarella X) Master Barber from King Of Shaves who says:-

Firstly your skin will be very sensitive the first time you shave after taking a month off; secondly remember never shave against the grain this will leave you with ingrown hairs and skin irritation

For a silky smooth stubble free face follow my step by step guide below:-

-          Prior to shaving, gently wash your face with warm water or steam with a small towel soaked in hot water. This softens the beard and relaxes the face muscles. (Or if you prefer, shave in the shower by touch as this is also a great technique.)

-          To battle your month long stubble I’d recommend shaving oil as your weapon of choice-  it gives good razor glide and limits the possibility of razor burn.

-          Using a clean razor, shave in the direction of beard growth, let the razor glide over the skin without excessive pressure. Start at the sideburns and work down each side of the face toward the chin.

-          To shave the area under the nose, push the nose upwards with one finger, shaving sideways across the top lip. Always shave in the direction of the beard growth below the jaw line. With your free hand, feel around the face for any missed hairs and repeat if necessary.

-          Once you have shaved your entire beard in the direction of growth, try shaving across the grain to get a super smooth shave.

-          After shaving rinse the face with cool water and apply an alcohol-free post shave lotion. Only apply cologne to the sides of the neck and chest as the alcohol can irritate your skin especially if you plan to wear a collared shirt.
